According to a report from Buster Olney of ESPN, the Tampa Bay Rays are shifting their mindset surrounding the trade deadline. The Rays aren’t playing well, and Olney reports that both Rays’ staffers and rival clubs have been shocked by the recent rough patch. To that end, the club may transition into sell mode and dangle Yandy Díaz in trade conversations. Would they really want to trade him to a division rival?
The situation remains fluid, but injecting Yandy Díaz into the trade market would shake things up.

Red Sox Have Expressed Interest in Trade for Yandy Díaz
The Red Sox have been at the forefront of Díaz rumors for some time. It’s understandable after the club absorbed the loss of Triston Casas and Romy Gonzalez, and Abraham Toro posted subpar offensive production. Díaz would change that equation as a right-handed bat that Boston has been trying to find for a long time. The Rays slugger is certainly getting toward the latter stages in his career, but still playing well amid his age-33 season. He has raked at Fenway Park with a .317 average, four home runs, and 22 RBI in 47 career games in Boston.
Díaz Having a Solid Season
Díaz is experiencing a solid 2025 season, slashing .286/.345/.475 line with 18 home runs and 61 RBI in 99 games. He has a 128 OPS+ and healthy 13.9% strikeout and 7.7% walk rates. Díaz is an attractive offensive piece with the pedigree of a former batting champion. Díaz’s Savant page is ruby red with a 53.5% hard-hit rate and .298 xBA. He hit five of his 18 home runs in July and has turned on it recently. Since June 1, Diaz ranks fourth among qualified DHs in OBP and fifth in slugging. Díaz’s days as a versatile defender on the baseball diamond appear to be over, but he still remains playable at first base. He has played 13 games at first base this season, with the remaining portion coming at DH.
Díaz is a Fan Favorite
Rays fans have adored Díaz since he arrived in Florida via trade with Cleveland. Diaz is a former All-Star and batting champion who drives the bus of the Rays’ offense. Obviously, the Rays could survive without Díaz because of the young talent they have accumulated on the roster. The majority of first base reps would go to 2025 All-Star Jonathan Aranda and whatever talent is brought back in a trade. The key is acquiring MLB-ready talent in a hypothetical Díaz trade because he is still extremely valuable. The Rays can use high-end bullpen help as that unit has largely been responsible for the recent struggles.
The Rays Need To Be Careful
He has an extremely affordable $12 million contract next season, and the specter of new team ownership should loosen up the purse strings. The Rays won’t spend like drunken sailors under new ownership, but they should be able to handle club options on players like Díaz. The nightmare scenario would be the Red Sox trading for him and extending him as he plays well against the Rays for a few more seasons. The Rays plan on contending in 2026 and need offense to compete in the AL East alongside their stout pitching staff.
