Rays Right-Hander Lands on 15-Day IL

July 22, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

The Tampa Bay Rays have placed right-handed pitcher Ryan Pepiot on the 15-day injured list due to a right knee infection. Minor league pitcher Tyler Zuber has been called up. The Rays’ 40-man roster now holds 38 players. The Rays can’t seem to catch a break this season with injuries in their starting rotation.

Ryan Pepiot Goes on Injured List With Right Knee Injury

Pepiot was sporting a 3.92 ERA on the season with 94 strikeouts. The 26-year-old made his MLB debut in 2022 with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. He also has a 6-5 record and is 6’5” in height. Across 87 1/3 innings of work, he has recorded 94 strikeouts. Taking Pepiot’s roster spot is 29-year-old Zuber. He is a right-handed pitcher and is 5’11” in height. He has previously played in MLB for the Kansas City Royals.

This injury speaks to why it is difficult for fans to get excited when it is talked about how solid the Rays starting rotation will be next year and in the future. Hopefully, Pepiot’s knee injury will not leave him on the IL for long. With Max Fried from the Atlanta Braves and now Pepiot going on the IL today, the number of pitchers hit by injuries in 2024 continues to be concerning.

Rays Manager Comments on Pepiot’s Knee

Rays manager Kevin Cash claimed that Pepiot’s knee “blew up pretty good,” which required him to go to the hospital in New York to get IVs to treat the infection. Pepiot is still dealing with inflammation in his knee, and it will take time for him to recover. He was experiencing pain before the Rays traveled to New York following the All-Star break, saying that the knee felt achy. He was put on antibiotics to help to clear the infection. Pepiot can fly home once the hospital gives him the OK to leave. Cash said Pepiot would most likely not be gone for too long.
