Because there wasn’t one.
Despite a little weather (who ever thought we would see the day that weather delays would happen in Tampa!? I miss you, sweet, sweet Dome.) When the game finally did get underway about an hour after its originally scheduled start time, it was Drew Rasmussen on the mound for the Rays up against Chad Patrcik for the Brewers.
The Brewers went 1-2-3 to start the first inning. In the home half Chandler Simpson kicked things off with a double, then over the following two outs was able to get himself to third. Jonathan Aranda got a two-out single to bring Simpson home, and the Rays were the first on the board.
The second inning was three-up, three-down for both sides, so hopefully you didn’t blink and miss it.
In the third, old friend Jake Bauers hit a leadoff single. Then one out later he stole second. However, two outs followed to ultimately lead him stranded. In the home half, Danny Jansen got a leadoff walk, but that would be the only baserunner the Rays would muster for the inning.
In the top of the fourth, with one out, Christian Yelich hit a solo home run to tie the game. Then William Contreras followed with a solo homer of his own, pushing them into the lead. Two outs followed, but the Rays were now trailing by one. In the bottom of the inning, Jonathan Aranda singled, then Kameron Misner singled. A Jose Caballero sac fly scored Aranda to re-tie the game.
Travis Jankowski doubled, but no additional runs scored.
Jake Bauers walked to start the fifth, then Joey Ortiz singled. A Calub Durbin groundout brought Bauers home. Two outs followed, but the Brewers were back up on top. In the home half, Simpson led off with a double, then Brandon Lowe walked. That was it for Patrick, who was replaced by Tyler Alexander. Junior Caminero came in to pinch hit for Misner and dang near hit the ball out of the park to tie it up again, but Bauers snapped it up.
Rasmussen’s day was done after five, replaced by Mason Montgomery. Brice Turang got a two-out walk, then stole second. But despite his hustle the Brewers didn’t get anything going. The Rays went 1-2-3 in the home half.
Garrett Cleavinger was the next Rays’ reliever up in the seventh. Caleb Durbin got a two-out walk, then Sal Frelick singled. Manuel Rodríguez replaced Cleavinger, and got the final out of the inning. Abner Uribe came out of the pen for the Brewers and gave up a leadoff single to Jansen. Simpson grounded into a double play, and the Rays were unable to get another baserunner going.
The Rays made yet another pitching change for the eighth, bringing in Eric Orze. Christian Yelich hit a leadoff single, then stole second. With two outs, Rhys Hopkins singled to score Yelich. That was it for the Brewers, but they had widened the gap. The Brewers also made another pitching change, bringing in Joel Payamps. Aranda got a one-out single, but a double play then ended the inning.
Cole Sulser was the next Rays’ pitcher up, and got the Brewers out in order. The game headed into the ninth, the last chance for the Rays to get something going. They’d need to do it against new pitcher Trevor Megill. The Rays went 1-2-3 to finish things off.
Final: Rays 2, Brewers 4
