Player of the Series: Joe Boyle

His time in Durham reached its boiling point.

When Joe Boyle has command, he might just be the most lethal pitcher in baseball.

After decimating the International League with the Durham Bulls, the Rays finally are giving Boyle a spot on the active roster. Boyle rewarded the Rays by hurling five innings and allowing just one unearned run on two hits while he walked one and struck out seven.

Boyle pitched in relief of Drew Rasmussen in what will be a plan going foward of having Rasmussen pitch 1-3 innings and then having Boyle go in relief for as long as possible. Boyle’s dominance was needed for the Rays as they looked to avoid a sweep at the hand of the Minnesota Twins. When Boyle left the game, the Rays held a 4-2 lead entering the eighth inning. Unforunately, the bullpen’s struggles continued as Mason Montgomery surrendered a game tying homerun. The Rays managed to rally in the 10th inning and hold on for a victory.

Boyle, 25, has now pitched in three seasons in the big leagues but his command has held him back from being a regular member of a starting rotation despite having one of the best arsenals in the game. With his appearance on Sunday, Boyle now has a 0.00 ERA | 1.49 FIP with a 37.8 K% & 8.1 BB% over 10 innings pitched for the Rays.
