Veteran Dallas Stars forward Matt Duchene has re-signed with the team. Duchene has spent the last two seasons on one-year deals with Dallas, centring their second line as they battled their way to the Western Conference Final. He’s decided to stick around instead of testing free agency, with a four-year deal worth $18 million.

Duchene originally signed with the Stars in 2023 after being released by the Nashville Predators. That season, he was among Dallas’ best forwards with 65 points (25 goals and 40 assists). The veteran then re-signed with Dallas on a one-year, $3 million deal last July. He proved his worth again by scoring 30 goals and leading the Stars with 82 points during the regular season. While his goal-scoring touch disappeared in the playoffs, he was still one of the team’s most productive players in terms of moving the puck, playing a complete two-way game, and setting up his teammates.
Duchene had previously stated that he was considering a return to Dallas but also acknowledged that he is at a stage in his career where there are additional priorities for him and his family entering this round of free agency. Seems as though general manager Jim Nill was able to convince him to stick around and take another run at Lord Stanley’s cup.
Stars Bring Back Important Veteran Leader
Duchene is a veteran player who has been productive his entire career and can play all over the lineup. He primarily played on Dallas’ second line with Tyler Seguin and Mason Marchment, but at times, injuries forced the Stars to shuffle their lineups. Nearly every forward in the lineup played on multiple lines throughout the season and had their roles adjusted frequently.
He is also one of the top leaders in an NHL locker room and a player who has reached significant stages of the postseason despite not yet winning a Stanley Cup. Dallas’s team is deep from top to bottom. Re-signing shows that Duchene believes in this group and their ability to be in the mix again in the coming years.
