NHL Predictions for February 25th, Tampa Bay Lightning vs Toronto Maple Leafs

February 27, 2026 by Last Word On Hockey

Each day, our writers here at Last Word On Hockey break down key matchups, storylines, and stats, then make predictions based on how games may play out. For this edition, we’ll look at the Tampa Bay Lightning hosting the Toronto Maple Leafs at Amalie Arena. Don’t forget to check out more NHL Predictions, as our writers continue this series throughout the 2025–26 season.

Overview

The Tampa Bay Lightning (37-14-4) welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs (27-21-9) in a cross-division showdown right after the thrilling Olympics finale. That game saw Team USA beat Canada 2-1 in OT. This game also looks plenty intriguing on paper and likely downright stressful in real time. Historically, Toronto holds a slight edge in the all-time matchup with more wins (67–45–2) and goals (420-368) overall, though recent seasons have been tightly contested. Tampa Bay’s offence ranks near the top of the NHL this season, while Toronto’s attack is solid, even if its defence and special teams can be a bit up-and-down. With plenty of star power on both sides, this game has “highlight reel” written all over it.

Tampa Bay Lightning Outlook

Tampa Bay, 1st in the Atlantic Division, is running one of the league’s most effective dual systems: high-event offence paired with a stingy defence. Nikita Kucherov continues to grab points (91) like he’s counting stars in the sky.  The supporting cast includes Team USA Olympian Jake Guentzel (60 points) and Brandon Hagel (54), who consistently generate secondary scoring that forces opponents to scramble. With a deep defensive group led by returning Captain Victor Hedman (day-to-day) and reliable goaltending by Andrei Vasilevskiy, Tampa Bay’s overall profile matches up well with virtually any opponent.

Tampa Bay Lightning Keys to Victory

For the Lightning, NHL Predictions thinks it’s all about discipline and puck management. Toronto has shown it can punish turnovers and get more offence than it perhaps “earns” at even strength. This is especially true when players like Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner are engaged. Tampa must limit giveaways and avoid undisciplined penalties, as the Leafs thrive on transition chances. Tampa’s power play (22.4%, 12th in the league) also needs to be assertive and opportunistic, seizing any clean entries into the offensive zone. Lastly, sustaining high-quality shot totals through the middle of the ice will help tilt the possession battle in Tampa’s favour and prevent Toronto’s defence from feeling “comfortable.” The Bolts’ goals against is 2.51, 2nd in the league. Their penalty kill% sits at 83.9%, 4th in the league.

Toronto Maple Leafs Outlook

The Maple Leafs bring a potent and dynamic offence led by star forwards William Nylander (52 points) Auston Matthews, (48 points) and John Tavares (47 points).  Toronto has historically outpaced Tampa in recent meetings, including their last five games. Goaltending has had its highlight reel moments from Joseph Woll and Dennis Hildeby, but consistency remains a question mark. Toronto’s best chance comes when they maintain pace in scoring and use their speed and creativity to force Tampa’s defence into uncomfortable decisions.

Toronto Maple Leafs Keys to Victory

NHL Predictions thinks Toronto can thrive in the Tampa cold (yes, that’s a true statement lately). Toronto must win the early tempo battle. Scoring first or establishing territorial pressure early would force the Bolts to chase the game and potentially overextend. Discipline will also be vital; while Toronto’s penalty kill is competent, giving Tampa too many opportunities with the man advantage risks snowballing. Well, it’s not that cold yet for snowballs. Controlling rebounds and limiting high-danger chances in front of their own net gives Toronto a chance to stay close and lean on their top-end scoring to make the difference late. Finally, playing confident, structured defence will prevent the game from devolving into a wild track meet, a style that usually favours Tampa’s depth.

Prediction

NHL Predictions thinks this game has all the makings of a tight, entertaining affair between star-laden rosters. Tampa’s balanced attack and strong defensive metrics give them a slight edge at home, while Toronto’s historical success and offensive talent ensure the Leafs will be a handful. Expect momentum shifts and a late push that keeps fans on the edge of their seats.

Prediction: Lightning 4, Maple Leafs 3 (OT)

Prop Bets of the Night

Always verify current lines and player status before betting or finalizing fantasy rosters.

  • Team Total – Lightning Over 3.5 Goals (+105): Tampa’s offensive depth makes over 3.5 goals a tempting play, especially at home.

  • Anytime Goal Scorer – Auston Matthews (+140): Matthews is one of the most consistent finishers in the league and will likely be involved on offence.

Final Thoughts

This matchup pairs one of the NHL’s most efficient offences against a club with historical confidence and individual brilliance.  Expect an action-packed game with special teams playing a key role and a finish that could easily swing either way.
