Carolina Hurricanes Claim Goalie Off Waivers

November 9, 2025 by Last Word On Hockey

A familiar face is returning to the Carolina Hurricanes organization. News emerged on Saturday afternoon that the Hurricanes claimed goalie Cayden Primeau off waivers. Primeau had spent the pre-season with Carolina, but was claimed by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Goalie Cayden Primeau Claimed Off Waivers by Carolina Hurricanes

Prmeau has played for the Montreal Canadiens and the Maple Leafs across his seven-year NHL career. The Farmington Hills, Michigan, native was in camp with the Hurricanes, but was claimed by the Maple Leafs. This was due to Joseph Woll leaving the team for personal reasons.

Primeau had a 2-1 record, but also had a 4.30 goals-against-average and .838 save percentage. The 26-year-old has a career record of 15-25-7, with 3.73 GAA and .882 save percentage. Montreal originally drafted Primeau in the seventh round, 199th overall, of the 2017 NHL Draft.

He is part of a hockey family, with Wayne Primeau as his uncle and Mason Primeau as his cousin.

Cayden Primeau was assigned to the AHL Chicago Wolves. However, he didn’t have to go through waivers because Carolina was the team that originally waived him in training camp.

What It Means

Reclaiming Primeau seems to be a way that the Hurricanes will keep cover for the goaltending position. Carolina already has Frederik Andersen and Pyotr Kochetkov to patrol the crease. However, having someone like Primeau is a good insurance policy for the Canes.

Primeau did have some struggles during his brief tenure with the Maple Leafs. However, he does have NHL experience and can step in if either Andersen or Kochetkov goes down to injury. Having an experienced NHL backup in the AHL isn’t a bad thing to have.

Toronto called up Dennis Hildeby to be the backup to Anthony Stolarz. The Maple Leafs should be getting Woll back soon after his conditioning stint with the AHL Toronto Marlies.
