Boston Bruins Sign GM Don Sweeny to Contract Extension

Sweeney has been the team’s general manager since 2015 and the Bruins had made the Stanley Cup Playoffs every year since the 2015-16 season. However, Boston missed the post-season and there were a lot changes made.

The Bruins had been among the top contenders for the majority of Sweeney’s tenure. Boston even made the Stanley Cup Final in 2019. However, the Bruins lost to the St Louis Blues in seven games. Boston had made the playoffs plenty of times, but never could get back to the final. His performance was rewarded with the NHL’s General Manager of the Year Award following the 2018-19 season.

He also recently served as general manager for Team Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off in 2025. Canada ended up winning the gold medal after defeating the United States in the final.

Before becoming the team’s general manager, Sweeney played 15 years for the Bruins. He had one season with the Dallas Stars before retiring at the end of 2003-04 season.

What It Means

The Bruins dealt stalwarts like Brad Marchand, Charlie Coyle, Brandon Carlo and others at the trade deadline. Boston’s trouble in player development has caught up to them and it faces uncertain future.

He did accumulate a number of draft picks and cleared out salary in order to reload for next season. However, Sweeney will likely have to go via the trade market to reshape the roster on the fly.

Sweeney’s tenure hasn’t been all troublesome as they have 458-233-91 regular season record during his tenure. However, the pressure is on him and President Cam Neely to get the Bruins out of the cellar of the Atlantic Division quickly. He has to hire a new coach and get some new players.
