The college football community learned Tuesday that former South Florida running back Mike Ford passed away. He was only 38 years old.
“Just hearing the tragic news that former @USFFootball tailback Mike Ford has passed away at age 38,” Joey Knight of the Tampa Bay Times wrote on X. “Ford’s 23 career rushing TDs remain tied for fifth in Bulls history.”
Ford played for USF from 2007-2009, rushing for 1,502 yards and 23 touchdowns. He also had seven receptions for 64 yards during that stretch.
Prior to joining USF’s football program, Ford was considered one of the best recruits from the Sarasota-Bradenton area. He ran for over 200 yards in 11 consecutive games.
Arguably the highlight of Ford’s football career was earning MVP of the International Bowl. He ran for 207 yards on 20 carries.
Details regarding Ford’s death have not been released at this time. The university will probably issue a statement in the near future.
For now, people are sharing their fondest memories of Ford on social media.
Our thoughts are with Ford’s family and friends.
