Update: According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Brey has not been hired by South Florida – yet, anyway.
Brey is a candidate for the position.
Just spoke to USF AD Michael Kelly. He said former Notre Dame coach Mike Brey is a candidate and has interviewed for the USF basketball job, but there’s only been discussions. There’s been no offer and nothing has been formalized.

Earlier: Despite rumors of the contrary, Notre Dame head basketball coach Mike Brey will not be retiring from coaching. Instead, he’s found a new job in the Sunshine State.
According to Russ Wood of Rivals, Brey is expected to become the new head coach of the University of South Florida. Brey takes over for Brian Gregory, who was relieved of his duties on March 10 after six years at the helm but with no NCAA Tournament appearances to show for it.
In 23 years as head coach at Notre Dame, Brey led the Fighting Irish to the NCAA Tournament 13 times with two trips to the Elite Eight and the only conference titles in program history. He went 483-280 with a 225-181 in-conference record.
Overall, Brey is 582-332 dating when factoring in his successful five year run as head coach of Delaware.

Mike Brey joins a USF program in desperate need of a change. The program has only made the NCAA Tournament three times in 50 years and have just one conference title.
If Brey can’t bring the program up out of the gutter, it’s hard to imagine any other available coaches who can.
Will Mike Brey be able to lead USF to the NCAA Tournament?
