TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Buccaneers’ Chris Godwin will be donning a slightly different jersey this year. It’s a small but significant change, and one close to his heart.
Godwin announced via social media Thursday he’s chosen to add “Jr.” to the name on the back of his jersey in honor of his father, Rod Christopher Godwin, Sr., who passed away in January last year.
“As a professional athlete, you are always recognized for the name on the front of your jersey, but I also play for the name that’s printed on the back,” Godwin wrote.
Godwin’s announcement included a heartfelt description of the close relationship they shared. He said his father had an “immeasurable impact” on his life and a major influence on his belief that he “could achieve anything.”
He also alluded to the name change being a type of Father’s Day gift. The holiday has become significant for Godwin in more ways than one as he recently became a first-time father himself.
Godwin’s full statement can be read below.

Originally a third-round draft pick out of Penn State in 2017, Godwin has gone on to have a highly successful career with the Buccaneers. He helped lead the Bucs to victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LV and ranks second in franchise history in most receiving categories.
