Safety Jordan Whitehead looks to be heading back to free agency.

Speculations regarding Jordan Whitehead’s contract were confirmed today when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers decided to decline his contract’s option. Whitehead was signed last offseason in a move that roused the team’s fanbase— Most were happy to see the return of the former Super Bowl champion after his brief hiatus with the New York Jets.

A year later, the team and Whitehead are once again planning to part ways.

2024 was a difficult season for Jordan Whitehead— Having anything but the return home most had hoped for, Whitehead battled and played through multiple injuries throughout the year and by season’s end had only suited up for 12 games. In those 12 contests, he totaled 79 tackles, however, Whitehead failed to record a single sack or turnover for the first time since his rookie year. The safety also found himself in a car accident late in the season which ultimately ended his 2024 campaign.

Although health was mentioned by Jason Licht, it remains unclear what level of impact the accident had on Tampa Bay’s decision— All indications are that Whitehead will be healthy and ready to play next season.

Licht was careful to leave the door open for a potential return, as he has been known to do in the past (most notably with Tom Brady). While the door may not be fully closed on Whitehead’s Tampa Bay Bucs’ career, it seems the two sides are headed for a second split— Only time will tell if it will lead to a second reunion.
