During an appearance on HBO’s The Shop, Brady didn’t hold back his true feelings about how his time as a free agent went. He revealed that he was disappointed when one team backed out of the sweepstakes.
“One of the teams, they weren’t interested at the very end. I was thinking, ‘You’re sticking with that motherf***er?,’” Brady said.
A lot of NFL fans believe Brady was talking about the San Francisco 49ers since they decided to stick with Jimmy Garoppolo. After all, there’s some history between those two quarterbacks since they were once teammates in New England.
While it’s unclear which team Brady was talking about on The Shop, we now know that at least one other NFC team was very interested in signing him last offseason. ESPN insider Jeff Darlington announced on Get Up that the New Orleans Saints nearly signed the future Hall of Famer.
“I’m gonna say it as clear as day: it’s the New Orleans Saints,” Darlington said. “Regret might be a strong word because ultimately Drew Brees decided to delay his broadcasting career and come back for one more season. The Saints did the right thing by bringing Brees back. But I think that people still underestimate how close Tom Brady was to signing with the New Orleans Saints up until he ultimately decided on the Bucs. I know that that’s gonna be a statement people try to question. It’s the truth.”
Darlington is right that New Orleans stayed loyal to Brees, but it certainly doesn’t help that Brady went into the Superdome this past year and knocked the Saints out of the playoffs.
To make matters worse, the Saints will have to face Brady and the Buccaneers twice this upcoming season. That could’ve been avoided had the two sides come to an agreement.
