Projected $66.7 Million Free Agent May Join Ravens, Commanders

February 14, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

free agent chris godwin

Tampa Bay Buccaneers impending free agent Chris Godwin will probably wave goodbye this offseason as he’s in line to earn a huge contract. However, according to a Bleacher Report, Tampa Bay will do everything in its power to retain one of its key wide receivers in its offense. Originally selected in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, the former Penn State product spent the entirety with the Buccaneers playing an integral role alongside star wideout Mike Evans. After the brutal end to Godwin’s season from this past 2024 campaign, it’s safe to say the wide receivers will be on the market looking for a “godfather” offer from several teams this offseason as he’s one of the top free agents.

Even though he was able to produce some big-time numbers during his time with Tampa Bay, recording consecutive 1,000-yard campaigns following a championship win, there could be some concerns about his health moving forward. After losing offensive coordinator Liam Coen to the Jacksonville Jaguars, it will probably become even more difficult since the new incoming coordinator will likely build a regime for Baker Mayfield’s offense. Keeping Godwin in the fold should put the Buccaneers back in for postseason contention but seemingly they did okay without him even though they were a first-round exit in the wild card. With that, the team might have to settle for a capable cheap veteran in the market to pair with Godwin for the offense going forward if they can’t retain Godwin.

However, the good news for Godwin is he will have a market and teams like the Ravens, Commanders could offer him a chance on the roster.

New Life for Jackson

The Baltimore Ravens failed miserably in the postseason for a second straight season in a row. After releasing Odell Beckham Jr., the team has yet to find the next wide receiver who has the capable footwork to pair behind Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman. However, it hit the Ravens in the worst way this past postseason since losing Flowers to an injury that kept him out of the contest. Isaiah Likely and Mark Andrews had to step up but that didn’t do Lamar Jackson justice since the pass game wasn’t the same as the matchup against the Bills went close to a shootout.

In this situation in the offseason, the Ravens should be looking for a new wide receiver but considering the salary cap situation, it will become difficult. Perhaps, the team could find a way to sign Godwin on a two-year deal similar to what they did with Derrick Henry last offseason. If the Ravens were able to get the best out of Henry in the running back department, it might be the same scenario for Godwin as long as he stays healthy.

Potential Duo for McLaurin

As for the Commanders, there are new reports that the team will be looking for the new WR2 this free agency. Terry McLaurin finally got the shine this season after being behind an inconsistent quarterback for several years. The team found themselves in the NFC Championship and they’re very close to a Super Bowl opportunity if they fill in some weak spots. Noah Brown probably won’t come back as he played a temporary role while wide receiver Dyami Brown could resign and move on top of the depth chart as the new No. 3 pass catcher.

However, since Olamide Zaccheaus is a free agent as well, they could sign him back as the No. 4 wideout. With that, the wideout department should be complete with Godwin’s presence for Jayden Daniel’s offense.
