The Bucs make sure Chris Godwin stays home with three-year, $66 million deal.

Wide receiver Chris Godwin was the top player at his position expected to hit free agency this week. However, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers refused to let him hit the open market in the end and have reportedly agreed to a new three-year, $66 million contract with $44 million guaranteed.

Always thought it would end this way. With Higgins, Adams, Metcalf and now Godwin off the board….makes you wonder what the plan is in NE and LAC.

The new deal solidifies the Bucs’ top receiving trio, keeping Godwin on the field with both Mike Evans and surprising rookie Jalen McMillan.

Godwin started the 2024 season on fire prior to his season-ending injuries just seven games into the schedule. In those 6+ games he was healthy, he recorded 50 receptions for 576 yards and five touchdowns. His receptions and and touchdown totals were on pace for career highs while his yardage was on pace to be his best since his 1,333-yard season in 2019.

The emergence of McMillan following Godwin’s injury could have easily convinced the Bucs that they’d be fine on offense moving forward without him, but in the end, they chose to keep Baker Mayfield’s top weapons together for the foreseeable future as they chase another NFC South crown and a shot at a Super Bowl in 2025.
