Baker Mayfield resurrected his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2023, and in the process, earned himself a new contract.
On Wednesday, the Buccaneers held a media session to announce Mayfield’s new deal, reportedly worth $100 million (up to $115 million) with $50 million guaranteed over three years.
Mayfield’s competitiveness, as well as his overall play, impressed the Tampa Bay brass during last season. General manager Jason Licht made that clear during today’s press conference.
“Funny moment describing Baker’s toughness, GM Jason Licht called him a ’10 on the prick scale,'” tweeted NFL Network’s Sarah Walsh. “And then Licht apologized to Nelson Luis the Bucs VP of communications while going on to say ‘Baker is an offensive lineman in a quarterback’s body.'”
After he was released by the Carolina Panthers midway through the 2022 season, Mayfield’s career was at a crossroads. The former No. 1 overall pick displayed flashes in an ensuing stint with the Los Angeles Rams, which enticed the Buccaneers to take a chance on him in free agency.
Mayfield rewarded the team with the best individual season of his career. He threw for 4,044 yards and 28 touchdowns, both career-highs, while leading the Bucs to the NFC South title.
In the playoffs, Mayfield threw for 337 yards and three touchdowns in a Wild Card win over the Philadelphia Eagles before logging 349 passing yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions in a loss to the Detroit Lions the following weekend.
