Baker Mayfield is heading to the NFC South. According to Tom Pelissero, the former No. 1 pick is finalizing a deal with the Buccaneers.
“The #Bucs are finalizing a deal with former No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield, per sources,” Pelissero reported on Wednesday. “Mayfield finished his fifth NFL season strong after landing with the #Rams. Now he gets a chance to take over for Tom Brady in Tampa, and is still only 27.”
Pelissero said it’s a one-year, $8.5 million deal for Mayfield.
Over the past few weeks, Tampa Bay has been considered the top landing spot for Mayfield.
Mayfield, who had plenty of ups and downs in 2022, will have the chance to revitalize his career while throwing to talented players such as Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.
After a brutal stint with the Panthers from September through November, Mayfield was claimed by the Rams for the final stretch of the 2022 regular season. He completed 63.6 percent of his pass attempts for 850 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions.
Time will tell if Mayfield can return to his 2020 form.
