3 Observations After a Crucial Week 14

December 9, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

Week 14 delivered a major shift in the playoff race. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in legit trouble after their loss to the New Orleans Saints. The Indianapolis Colts have completely collapsed after a strong and exciting start. The Detroit Lions are in full-blown playoff mode and must treat every game down the stretch like an elimination game. These 3 observations after a crucial Week 14 show how fast the league can change and how much pressure now surrounds each team.

3 Observations After Week 14

 Are the Buccaneers in Trouble?

Tampa Bay opened the season with confidence, starting 6-2. The offense moved the ball with rhythm. Baker Mayfield looked sharp and was playing at an MVP level before he hurt his left shoulder. His production dipped after that injury. The roster also battled injuries to Calijah Kancey, Mike Evans, and Chris Godwin. The group never stayed fully healthy.

Tampa Bay then dropped a game they needed to win. They fell to the Saints 24-20 and slipped to 7-6. Carolina holds the same record after its bye. Assuming both Tampa and Carolina win their week 15 matchups, Carolina and Tampa play in week 16, and the loser of that game will likely miss the playoffs. Tampa Bay has no more room for error.

The Buccaneers now face a must-win Thursday night matchup with Atlanta. A loss opens the door for Carolina to jump into first place. A win keeps Tampa Bay alive in the NFC South race. The early-season energy is gone, and the team now fights to regain momentum before the season slips away. The Buccs are also hoping to get their franchise receiver Mike Evans back soon. Evans broke his collarbone in week 7 vs. Detroit.

Colts Completely Falling Apart

Indianapolis started the season 8-2 and looked like a real contender. Daniel Jones played efficient football until he fractured his fibula. Jones didn’t look comfortable at all with the fractured fibula. And now the Colts lost four of their last five and dropped three straight. The confidence they built early in the season vanished.

The collapse reached another level of devastation on Sunday. Daniel Jones tore his Achilles against Jacksonville and now his year is over. Indianapolis turns to Riley Leonard to hold the team together in the Wild Card race.

The remaining schedule creates serious problems. Indianapolis finishes with Seattle, San Francisco, Jacksonville, and Houston. Each matchup carries real risk for a team with no momentum. A season that felt full of promise now sits on the edge of a complete meltdown with a real possibility of losing out.

Lions Are Playing Playoff Football Already

Detroit stepped right back into the thick of the NFC playoff race with a statement win over the Cowboys. They won 44-30 and raised their playoff chances across several projection models. The team knows it still needs to win out or come close to it. The Lions also need some help and need Chicago or San Francisco to at least lose one of their remaining games.

The loss of safety Brian Branch hurts the defense. His instincts, tackling and coverage ability helped stabilize the secondary. Detroit now adjusts without him at the most important point of the season. Due to the loss, the Lions have signed former Browns safety Damontae Kazee.

The Lions prepare for a heavyweight matchup with the Rams next week. This game helps shape the NFC playoff picture even more as the Rams look to lock in the one seed. The Lions will treat every remaining game like it’s January football. Their identity fits the moment and the pressure that comes with it.
